With over two decades of experience, our instructors will lead you through a natural progression of skills training you to be a safe, accomplished pilot. Below, we have have some thoughts about how to choose a paragliding school. Think of your relationship with a paragliding school as a long-term relationship. While it may only take a few lessons to earn your novice certification, you want to choose a school that will be involved in your development as a pilot through your advanced rating and beyond. Make sure the staff respects you and your time and are dedicated to giving you professional instruction and long-term support. How will you know? Ask... How long has the school been established? Does this school have several instructors? What are their qualifications? Is the training schedule flexible? Are lesson reservations available 7 days a week? Is the training site consistently trainable? What kind of equipment will students be trained on? What is the school's training philosophy? How long has the school been established? While a newer school is not necessarily a bad choice, a school with a proven track record can give you peace of mind, knowing that the school will be there to support you long into the future. Just as when choosing a brain surgeon, look for skill first and price second. There are a number of "cut rate" schools out there (although their numbers are shrinking) that are definitely the last place you want to learn to fly. For a professional school to stay in business, it must charge a reasonable amount of money for lessons. The gliders you abuse during your lessons will have to be replaced in time, and the money for that has to come from somewhere. No one--absolutely no one--is getting rich in the sport. The instructors who do it right are making somewhere between a paltry and a reasonable living. Does this school have several instructors? A school with several instructors will offer you flexibility in scheduling, learning and teaching styles. The opportunity to work with different instructors will expose you to a number of different approaches to learning the same skills, increasing your retention. We have many instructors available most every day - instructing at the training hill, flying in the local mountains, or often available if you want to do a one-on-one instructional clinic, covering your first high Mountain Flights, Thermalling, Reserve Parachutes, Cross Country Skills, or a Mountain Site Introduction. Having multiple instructors available means more options for you to take advantage of Santa Barbara's unique and plentiful flying opportunities. The instruction at Fly Above All is unsurpassed by any other school in the United States. We have full time instructors and staff that are available to teach our students on a daily basis. One of those instructors was a member of the 2001 US Team AND has held cross-country distance records. Chad was recently made the Chairman of the Training Committee for the USPPA. This honor says what Fly Above All is all about - Offering the highest quality instruction available and helping others improve so they can do the same. Fly Above All's instructors have the knowledge of educational theory, years of paragliding instruction, experience of flying sites around the country and the world, and abound in enthusiasm. Our Instructor Assistants are also an incredible resource for the new pilot. These individuals are the next generation of Instructors, and are going through the training process to become fully certified Instructors by teaching in our Apprenticeship Program. These individuals are often Advanced pilots, and are also available many days to just go flying at a local ridge or in the mountains. We also host many guest instructors not listed here that come to teach with us, or offer a specialized clinic or event from time to time. What is the maximum and average number of students per instructor? We strongly recommend choosing a school that offers a student:instructor ratio of no more than 3:1. Sometimes schools will try to skirt the challenges of having a single instructor, very few teaching days, or low tuition prices by training far too many students at once. The end result of a high student/low instructor ratio, which is a waste of your time and a compromise of your safety. Even schools that offer 8 hour class periods a day, for weeks on end, cannot give you adequate attention if the instructor is spread too thin, among too many students. Fly Above All makes the most of your training time, averaging well below the 3:1 ratio. A five to six hour lesson, with lots of individual attention will yield plentiful opportunity for repetition of skills and personal coaching. We have found that more than 6 hours of hands on training can result in a mental and physical fatigue that compromises the student's safety without a significant skill gain.
As a student's proficiency increases, they are often invited to continue working on their ground handling skills after the formal lesson is over. We do not push you through the basics, the foundation of good habits and skills, just to get you into the mountains. There is plenty of time for that! We want to make sure you spend the time necessary master the fundamentals before you find yourself in over your head in a challenging situation. We want to see plenty of practice of these fundamentals, so that when you do take that larger step, you are really ready. This means spending more time (and money, for us) on the basics, but you end up with a better education as a result. Additionally, ground school is conducted separate from hands-on paragliding time. This allows you to concentrate on practical skills at the hill, and the conceptual understanding in a focused learning environment.
Is the training schedule flexible? A professional school will respect the value of your time. They will have instruction available on the days you're available, not only when it fits their schedule. Fly Above All is flexible. We have USHGA certified instructors available to work with you any day of the week with reservations. Fly Above All, could complete your P1 (beginner rating) in 2 to 3 day lessons, however you will need your P2 to be ready to fly on your own. The average student in our program takes 6-10 days at our training hill and eight hours of ground school to receive their their Novice Certification. We also include several guided mountain flights after completing the Novice certification, as we work with you to become part of the flying community and on your way to your intermediate rating. We will structure the training program to fit your schedule. You can plan on coming out as little as once or twice a month, or plan on a 7-10 day course on consecutive days. This flexibility has allowed us to train pilots from Santa Barbara to LA, around the country and around the world (Massachusetts, Oregon, Florida, Texas, Alaska, Colorado, Sri Lanka, Ireland, England, France and Luxembourg). No matter what your time frame, Fly Above All, will take a very conservative and safe approach to your lessons. There are other schools where you will be pushed to advance quickly. Fly Above All's philosophy is different. We know P2 training is the basis for everything you learn about flying in the future. We want you to be a safe pilot throughout your flying career. Therefore we give you the time and individual attention you need to perfect the skills that make a great novice pilot. When you are ready to fly the mountains you will do so with your instructor and a ground crew. Personal and radio contact as you launch, fly and land will accompany you throughout all of your training flights.
Is the training site consistently trainable? You'd rather spend your training time paragliding than parawaiting, right? Fly Above All has the best training
hill in the universe! Why is it so great? Central California offers weather similar to the Mediterranean. It is trainable year round, with over 350 trainable days last year. The training hill has a gentle grade so we can start you at low altitudes and work our way up. There are smooth breezes off the ocean to fly in and open fields where you can practice your kiting. There is also a road so we can pick you up at the bottom of the hill and drive you back to the top for your next flight. No time wasted hiking! Spend your time paragliding instead!
You will want to look to quality instructors as you progress into your intermediate paragliding rating and beyond. To get the basics of paragliding is relatively easy. To master paragliding will take a lifetime. Many students want to take paragliding to higher levels or even want to fly with power, with a Paramotor or PPG Trike. Knowing this, we can fit you into a wing that will be able to work for you for all of these activities so you will not have to buy two or three wings. Our instructors know the intricacies of moving from foot launched free-flight to powered paragliding (and vice-versa), focusing on the habits and skills you will need to master to be successful at both. Fly Above All Instructors and Instructor Assistants fly as often as possible, usually every day, with former students to offer informal learning opportunities and to make certain our pilots are comfortable with the local sites. Just as important, Fly Above All has created a community atmosphere among our alumni. You will find that there is always someone willing to lend an extra hand or go flying with you once you have completed your P2. We fly as a group almost every weekend, and regularly take former students on trips to new flying sites around CA, the US and even Mexico and France. We also meet as a club at the SBSA (local USHGA Chapter) meetings and offer a paraglider's potluck at rotating members house once a month. The opportunity to get together and exchange information is invaluable.
What kind of equipment will students be trained on? If the school you are considering does not represent a manufacturer's line of gliders that should be a clue that the school wasn't professional enough for a manufacturer to allow them to sell its gliders. However, just because a school does represent a manufacturer doesn't mean that it is professional. You may want to get your harness first, then your wing later during your training. Beware of a school that is encouraging you to buy your equipment before you start, or within two or three days of beginning your program. A policy that assumes that a new student has the experience or knowledge to decide on a Paragliding Equipment Package before they start or by the third day of lessons is simply not realistic. You simply will not have enough time under the wing to tell any difference between gliders until you have nearly completed your training. Pushing you to buy something before you know enough to make an informed decision is simply not right. That kind of policy is about the school's bottom line, and not what is best for you. Your trusted instructor will also be watching you and your particular skill set and style. As you advance, they will be able to recommend the right glider for your needs. Your instructor will take into account the type of flying you will be doing once you complete your course, look at your total equipment needs and your budget, and guide you in your purchase so that it is the best it can be for your particular situation. For most new pilots wanting to fly in the mountains, they will need to consider a package that includes the following: * Paragliding Wing Any school that only offers a discount for this package before the student starts, or during the first two or three days of instruction should be considered carefully, as there may be little incentive for that school to give you their full attention once the check clears the bank. Quite often, we have taken in "orphaned" students that had bought their whole package, only to be abandoned by the school once they had delivered the goods and taken the profit. One pilot was abandoned at the top of the mountain and had to walk all the way down after he confided to his instructor that he did not feel he was ready for the high flight yet! This is not the kind of treatment any pilot that has placed their trust in a reputable school should be subjected to! We have a community of pilots that fly almost every flyable day that we will introduce you to, once you have completed your training and had a few guided high flights, so you are never alone!
What is the school's training philosophy? A simple indicator of whether a school is professional or not, is whether they've put the time into thinking about why they do what they do.
