In Elings Park at Las Positas

Location: Cliff Drive Entrance of Elings Park near Las Positas
Altitude: 400 feet
Vertical: 200 feet
Best Wind: South at 4-12 mph

Across Cliff Drive from the Wilcox property is the Mesa Flight Area, part of the Elings Park property where foot-launched flight is taught in Santa Barbara.
     Our training hill is one of the best and most consistent teaching areas in the United States. In fact, there are only a few days each year that we cannot train students and enjoy flying and soaring this incredible site!
     If the gates are open, drive up the dirt road and park, or follow the road around to the top of the hill. You will most likely see one or more of our Fly Above All instructors at work here. Flying is permitted only when an authorized school has opened the gate to the Landing Zone.
     In addition to teaching foot-launched flight here, we will be offering clinics on various subjects from towing to thermalling here at the Mesa Flight Area. Be sure you read the Park Rules and sign the Elings Park Waiver as well as the Gliding Activities Waiver prior to flying here!

"My husband Eirik and I found "Fly Above All" on the Internet and talked to Chad Bastian soon after about lessons. Being from an area where there are no training hills, Los Angeles, the Elings Park training hill is the closest and nicest location we found. We took a total of six lessons at the hill and have spent numerous days, after we received our P2 certifications, flying and getting more experience.
     Throughout our training there was never a day that we were unable to fly due to conditions. The wind always blew from a favorable direction, but varied just enough to practice forward launches, crosswind launches, and even high wind launches. The launch and landing zones are large and free of obstructions making it easy for beginners to learn.
     We also learned, and continue to learn, a great amount from Chad's "support team" who freely give helpful hints and encouragement throughout the learning process. Our experience has been full of fun challenges and great learning opportunities."
