Weather
Analysis
Understanding weather is the first tool in telling us if it is a good
and safe day to launch our aircraft. We will look at all of the pieces
that make up this fascinating subject and conclude from concrete information
if the days' weather is appropriate to fly in.
We will be talking to an aviation weather
briefer to find out winds aloft, checking
the Internet to see soaring forecasts, balloon soundings, jet stream,
local forecasts, barometric pressures, surface winds and much more. We'll
also be taking a closer look at clouds and what they can help us predict
about that day's weather.
One of the key factors used by soaring pilots is called the Thermal Index. We will be exploring this and other tools used for determining whether it is the right weather to fly.
We will also
look at why Santa Barbara has such a unique environment for flying a paraglider.
